Family Therapy
“A dysfunctional family is any family with more than one person in it.” - Mary Karr
Family therapy can help you better understand your own family system and your role within your family. Implementing change within your family is easier when you know where you stand. Having a good sense of your own role can help you see how patterns and behaviors may have been recreated within your family over time. It may help you better understand why you behave in certain ways and how your actions are governed by your emotions. You can come to understand how your actions and emotions make sense given your family background, your relationships, and interactions with others. This understanding will guide you in making the changes you are seeking within your family and other significant relationships.
Parenting, for instance, can be a taxing experience, particularly for new parents or for those who are learning how to navigate the open waters of co-parenting. With family therapy, individuals learn problem solving skills that are generated by better communication and with the setting of healthy boundaries – an aspect of relationships many family members struggle with.
Family therapy can occur with families of school-aged children, teenagers, or adult family members coping with issues of transition. When adolescent issues present, parents may find themselves at the end of their rope. Investing time with family therapy can assist with removing the pressure and can gently redirect household dynamics. We are a practice full of child and adolescent specialists who are uniquely trained to provide flexible family therapy that caters to children of all ages. Oftentimes, we utilize activities and play-based strategies to engage all members of the family.
Family therapy is also helpful for families with college-aged or adult children. It is a mode of helping members in the family to begin understanding old patterns of relating and work toward understanding and developing new methods for improved communication. We want to help families recognize their strengths. In family therapy, we guide families to have more productive conversations, interactions, and relationships. We will give you the tools to resolve and minimize family issues so that you can focus on enjoying your time together again.
“There are no individuals in the world, only fragments of families.” - Carl Whitaker
